On April 27, 2017, the “Doing Intersectionality” Symposium, organized by Sociology graduate student Erin K. Phelps and Dashawn Hickman, celebrated LGBTQA+ centered work and the people that create it. Sociology graduate student, Bradley Powell, won first place in Oral Presentations for his paper “Power and Prevention: A Qualitative Inquiry into Racial Power Dynamics in HIV Prevention.” The event was sponsored by ACES+ McBride Lecture Endowment and the Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity.

Donte Gibbs, the Youth Engagement Director at Neighborhood Leadership Institute, has been selected as The George Gund Foundation Fellow for 2017-2019. Donte received a B.A. in sociology from Case Western Reserve University in 2010 and a master’s degree in Social Science Administration from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at CWRU. The Fellows program will provide Donte the opportunity to work for two years inside the George Gund Foundation, a foundation that plays an active role in supporting the civic life of Greater Cleveland and in various national policy deliberations that impact our community.
Gabriella Kaddu, undergraduate student in the Department of Sociology, was awarded the Peter Witt Scholarship through the College of Arts and Sciences at CWRU. This highly selective honor recognizes both Gabriella’s academic excellence, and her extraordinary commitment to outreach with Cleveland area homeless individuals.
Cassi Pittman has been awarded the Woodrow Wilson Foundation’s 2017 National Career Enhancement Fellowship for Junior Faculty. The fellowship seeks to increase the presence ofminority junior faculty members and other faculty committed to eradicating racial disparities incore fields in the arts and humanities. The Fellowship, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, supports the Mellon Foundation’s mission to strengthen, promote, and, where necessary, defend the contributions of the humanities and the arts to human flourishing and tothe well-being of diverse and democratic societies.
Alicia Smith-Tran, Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Sociology, was named a recipient of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) Dissertation Grant through the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation for the 2017-18 school year for her dissertation research, “Racialized Runners: Life Stories of Black Women Who Run.” The selection panel noted that they were “impressed by the strength of [her] application and the outstanding scholarship demonstrated in [her] dissertation chapter.”
