Rebecca Anna Schut is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology. Her research employs quantitative methods to investigate how systems of oppression (e.g., nativism, racism) shape policy environments and social institutions, resulting in nativity, racial-ethnic, and legal status inequities in health, well-being, and life chances. Her scholarship has been published in peer-reviewed outlets including Social Forces, Demography, Social Science & Medicine, Sociology of Health and Illness, International Migration Review, Demographic Research, and Population Research and Policy Review, among others.

Dr. Schut is currently pursuing two lines of research inquiry. The first explores how the U.S. immigration policy patchwork generates inequities in health and well-being among U.S.- and foreign-born workers. The second investigates place of education (i.e., whether an individual holds a foreign vs. U.S. educational credential) as an understudied axis of stratification shaping the social and economic integration of highly-educated immigrants.

Prior to joining Case Western, Dr. Schut was an NIA T32 Postdoctoral Fellow in the Specialized Training Program in the Demography and Economics of Aging at the University of Chicago. She holds a Ph.D. in Demography and Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.
