Sociology and Law Professor Brian Gran was recently featured in The Daily for two op-eds recently published in The Hill. Professor Gran addresses the rights of Syrian refugee children and the role of hospitals in improving community health.
“How the world can stop the radicalization of innocents in Syria” was published in November. Here, Professor Gran discusses the many families and children relocated to Al-Hol and Al-Roj refugee camps after the fall of the Islamic State and the need to fight for the rights of children.
December’s “Hospitals can truly benefit communities by going beyond the IRS standard” is coauthored by Professor Gran, CWRU alum Professor Cory E. Cronin (Ohio’s College of Health Sciences & Professions), and Berkeley Franz. They explore the role hospitals play in community health, discuss how hospitals’ tax-exempt status is contingent upon the IRS’ community benefit policy which requires hospitals promote health and benefit people served. The authors question whether hospitals truly offer community benefit when factors resulting in health inequities are not mitigated.
